Our History
We have our roots in the original church of the first century. The church has been proclaiming the gospel in Big Spring for over 100 years when Christians began settling in the area and planted the church in 1912.
This congregation is a restoration church, following the unity effort of the nineteenth century. In an attempt to overcome the many divisions of the Protestant Reformation, the concept of restoring the New Testament church by following the Bible only became a stated goal. We adhere to that great restoration plan, intending to speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where the Bible is silent. We claim only to be a church of Christ. We have organized ourselves as an autonomous congregation with scripturally appointed preachers, teachers, elders, and deacons serving in their assigned roles. We believe every Christian is a servant of God and we each seek to serve Him in our daily lives.
When construction began on January 1, 1929 and completed in March of that year the original building on the corner of 14th and Main streets was completed. Additions and renovations over the years have led to the three joined structures extending to 15th street. The membership has fluctuated with the ups and downs of the oil field activity and the coming and eventual closing of Webb Air Force Base. Other area churches of Christ are active as well, with 14th and Main having the largest number of members.
